YouTube Kids is now available for Apple TV

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge YouTube Kids, Google’s video streaming service aimed at children, can now be viewed on Apple TV streaming boxes, the company announced. The YouTube Kids app is available to download now in the App Store in the UK, US, and dozens of other countries. It can be used with or without a Google login.
A key selling point for YouTube Kids is its parental controls, which can be used to set viewing limits, content restrictions based on age, and other limits. In 2018, YouTube started allowing parents to restrict content to human-approved videos. You can sign in to your account to transfer existing parental controls to the Apple TV, and Google says you can change your settings from the tablet or phone app. YouTube Kids can be restricted to specific…

Google tests voice matching to secure Google Assistant purchases

The feature is intended for use with smart speakers and displays, according to Google. | Image: Android Police Google Assistant’s Voice Match feature can now secure purchases made through its voice assistant as part of a limited pilot program. A spokesperson from the company confirmed to Android Police that the functionality is new, and is designed to help secure purchases made on smart speakers and smart displays. At the moment, it’s restricted to in-app digital purchases through Google Play, as well as restaurant orders.
When we followed the instructions shown on Google’s support page to enable the feature we only saw the option to enable the assistant’s existing fingerprint or face unlock security methods. Other users have reported that they were able to see the Voice Match menu option, but that the software froze when they tried to enable it….

Apple iOS app updates are being re-issued for unknown reasons

Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge If your iPhone or iPad has dozens of apps needing unexpected updates, don’t worry: you’re not alone. For some reason, Apple appears to be reissuing recently-published app updates, resulting in users having to reinstall the latest version of some apps.
Among the Verge team, the number of unexpected updates ranged from less than twenty to nearly 100, with updates dating back to the beginning of the month resurfacing from the depths of the App Store. Your experience will vary, of course, depending on how many apps you have and have frequently you update them.
Exactly why these updates are being reissued isn’t clear, but, as MacRumors notes, it might have something to do with a bug that seems to be affecting apps as of iOS 13.5. This bug…

Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Plus renders suggest a slightly bigger screen and much bigger camera bump

Renders of the Note 20 Plus come from leaked CAD drawings. | Credit: @OnLeaks / Pigtou Last year’s Galaxy Note 10 Plus was truly a thing of beauty, with an amazing screen and superlative industrial design. And, judging by some high-quality (and completely unofficial) renders of the Galaxy Note 20 Plus, it looks like Samsung won’t be changing too much in 2020. The only major difference is a new, bulkier camera module on the rear of the device.
These renders come from noted leaker @OnLeaks in collaboration with phone-case maker Pigtou. As with all renders based on leaked CAD drawings, they should be taken with a pinch of salt, but the design they suggest for the Note 20 Plus seems reasonable enough.
The most obvious feature is the big, nearly edge-to-edge display, with curved bezels, sloping sides, and a small, central…

President Trump is reportedly considering creating a panel to examine bias online

President Trump held a “social media summit” at the White House last summer. | Photo by Alex Wong/Getty Images President Trump wants to create a panel that would look into complaints of bias against conservatives on social media and other online platforms, The Wall Street Journal reported.
What authority the panel would have, and under what department it would be based were not clear. But the Journal’s sources said the plans may include establishing a “White House-created commission” that would work in conjunction with agencies like the Federal Elections Commission and Federal Communications Commission to examine bias and censorship online. A White House official told the WSJ that “left wing bias in the tech world is a concern that definitely needs to be addressed.”
The president tweeted a similar opinion last week, that “The Radical Left is in…

Google Messages may finally be adding end-to-end encryption for RCS

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge An analysis of the latest update to Google Messages suggests it may be moving closer to having end-to-end encryption for RCS, according to 9to5 Google (via APKMirror). Rich communication services, or RCS, is the successor to SMS messaging and does what most other texting services do, but without the end-to-end encryption that apps like Signal and iMessage have. Its widespread adoption has been a bit of a mess, but the major US cellular carriers announced late last year that they would offer RCS in 2020.
Google first unveiled RCS chat as Android’s primary texting platform in 2018, and in November, announced it was actually rolling it out to users in the US.
An internal build of Google Messages v. 6.2 has several lines of code that offer…
